Thed Björk bounces back in tough MotorLand Aragón qualifying

2020-10-31

Thed Björk was fastest of the Lynk & Co Cyan Racing drivers during the World Touring Car Cup qualifying session at MotorLand Aragón while points leader Yann Ehrlacher struggled.

The Swede was fourth fastest in the first qualifying session and third fastest in the final qualifying session, collecting a total of four points to the championship.

"To bounce back like this is of course a boost for my confidence and it feels really good to be back in the front. We have a lot of work ahead of us tomorrow though as we didn't manage to get all cars in the top, something that is key to the title fight," said Thed Björk.

Yann Ehrlacher had a tough qualifying session, finishing 18th after having one of his lap times removed due to exceeding track limits.

The Frenchman has a massive task ahead of himself as he will start from the back of the pack in all three races.

"I exceeded the track limits in Turn 3 apparently. I'm sure I didn't, but the lap wasn't enough for Q2 anyway. After that I got a big vibration and that cost me some speed out of the corners. I'm super disappointed, especially as my team-mates were in Q2 and Q3. It will be tough tomorrow," said Yann Ehrlacher.

Santiago Urrutia made his way to the final qualifying session for the second time this year and the Uruguayan driver finished fourth behind team-mate Thed Björk.

"I'm super happy about my performance to make it to Q3 for the second time this season. A big thanks to everyone in the team, the car was amazing. I think the car was good enough for pole position but I did a mistake in the last sector. I'm really looking forward to the races tomorrow," said Santiago Urrutia.

Yvan Muller finished sixth in the second qualifying session, missing the Q3 session by just 26 thousands of a second.

"It didn't go as well as I wanted. Unfortunately I just missed Q3. I'm not very happy with the car, but as the same time I didn't drive very well," said Yvan Muller.

The first race of three this weekend starts at 09:15 CET tomorrow and is broadcast live on Eurosport.

UPDATE: Following several penalties and changes to the results, Thed Björk and Santiago Urrutia have been elevated to second and third on the grid for the third race. Yann Ehrlacher has had his Q1 times reinstated, meaning that he will start 13th in Race 2 and 3. Another driver's reinstated time in Q1 means that Thed Björk drops from P5 to P6 on the grid for Race 1.
