Yvan Muller and Yann Ehrlacher defy difficult Nürburgring conditions to double podium

2020-09-25

Yvan Muller and Yann Ehrlacher claimed a double podium finish for Lynk & Co Cyan Racing in the first World Touring Car Cup race of the weekend at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife in difficult weather conditions.

"I am pleased with second place today considering the circumstances. We had a tough qualifying session yesterday and today we faced wet conditions for the first time this weekend. I took it cautious during the race. A double podium for me and Yann is really good," said Yvan Muller.

Yann Ehrlacher started from sixth on the grid and managed to get past two cars on the notoriously difficult German circuit to finish third behind his team-mate.

"It was a really good race. I was expecting to be safe and secure my starting position. But I actually managed to overtake two cars and then Thed let me past. It was a really nice move, so big thanks to him. I am very happy about the day," said Yann Ehrlacher.

Thed Björk started fourth and crossed the finishing line in fourth after letting Yann Ehrlacher past on the last lap. The 2017 world champion had a tough fight with Audi driver Tom Coronel throughout the race and was able to get past at the start of the final lap.

"I fought really hard to follow Coronel and managed to get a good overtaking move on him. I owe some points to Yann from last year and now he got them back. It was a good points haul for us all today, especially as we went out onto the Nordschleife on wets without any running in the rain earlier this weekend," said Thed Björk.

Nürburgring newcomer Santiago Urrutia made impressive progress up through the field from 14th on the grid. The Uruguayan driver was as high as sixth before an incident on the last lap unfortunately ended his race.

"The race was going well and I made up a lot of positions. But as I passed Girolami, we had a little bit of contact and I think I got a puncture on the rear. It was very strange as I when I started to turn, I lost the car and hit Tassi. I feel bad for him but that's racing sometimes unfortunately," said Santiago Urrutia.

Yann Ehrlacher has extended his lead of the drivers' championship to eleven points over Honda driver Néstor Girolami.

Cyan Racing Lynk & Co (Ehrlacher/Muller) heads the teams' standings on 118 points, 33 points more than Honda team Münnich Motorsport.

The second race of the race weekend in Germany starts at 10:00 CEST tomorrow.
