Yann Ehrlacher claims vital points in Nürburgring twilight qualifying

2020-09-24

Yann Ehrlacher claimed eight vital points for the World Touring Car Cup standings by qualifying second at the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a lap time of 8:52.965 around the 25-kilometre circuit.

"I wanted that pole and I gave everything I could. My lap was really on the edge and to go for a quicker attempt would be too risky without a tow. But second is a good position to start from and I am pleased with the performance. Eight points in the bag is good, we need to keep delivering consistently," said Yann Ehrlacher.

2017 world champion Thed Björk qualified fourth and secured four points to the championship as the sun set over the German circuit.

"It does not get more intense than that, qualifying in the dark at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Fourth is okay, we always want to be first, but this is still important points to the championship. Yann did a good job today, he set a fantastic lap," said Thed Björk.

Santiago Urrutia recovered from a crash during free practice that had the team racing against time to repair his Lynk & Co 03 TCR to qualify seventh.

"Thank you to my crew, they have done a really good job after my crash. And to qualify seventh on my first time at the Nordschleife feels really good. I didn't want to push too much after the crash, but in the end I put together a good lap and got some points to the championship," said Santiago Urrutia.

Yvan Muller was dissatisfied after the qualifying session and will start from 11th on the grid in both races.

"We didn't get it right and I'm obviously not happy. It's not easy to overtake at this circuit but we will of course fight hard tomorrow," said Yvan Muller.

The first race of the weekend starts at 16:40 CEST on Saturday and the second race at 10:00 on Sunday.

Update: Santiago Urrutia has been given a penalty for missing the weighing during WTCR qualifying at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The penalty drops him P14 and at the same time promotes Yvan Muller to P1 on the grid for Race 1.
