Prince Carl Philip and Thed Björk claim podium in treacherous conditions

2018-08-18

Lotus Cyan Racing drivers Prince Carl Philip and Thed Björk claimed a podium finish in the first Swedish GT race of the weekend, fighting treacherous conditions as heavy rainfall hit the Gelleråsen Arena circuit moments before the start.

The race day was affected by a tragic incident in a test session earlier today where a marshal succumbed to his injuries.

“We couldn’t challenge for the win in the wet conditions today, something we had our target set on after a strong qualifying session. We fought hard for second place, a result I am pleased with. But it is difficult to be happy after the tragic incident that happened earlier today, our thoughts are with the family of the marshal that passed away,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Thed Björk started the race from class pole position but dropped one position before the pit stop. The duo was able to hold onto second place despite a hard fight with Maserati drivers Lilja and Mäkinen.

“We didn’t have enough rear grip today to fight for the win, but we managed to secure strong points and that was our objective. We are going to work hard with the car to find a bit more for the second race tomorrow. Usually a podium finish on my home track is something to be happy about, but that is difficult today with the tragic loss of a valued marshal,” said Thed Björk.

The second race of the weekend at Gelleråsen Arena starts at 13:25 CEST tomorrow.
